Meet Paul George

Paul George is making his first appearance in the Slam Dunk Contest in 2012. He has received honours at almost every level, starting with career at Pete Knight High School from his hometown of Palmdale, California by taking the Golden League MVP in 2007.

He was later recruited to Fresno State and also received offers from Penn State and Georgetown. Paul George was taken 10th overall in the 2010 NBA draft and was one of two players from that draft class to start a playoff game in his rookie year, along with Laundry Field of the Knicks. He became known in his time at Fresno for having a complete all-around game, showing promise on both sides of the court.

Some scouts were pleasantly surprised by his excellent free-throw percentages (80.9% over two years, including 91% in 2009), and great field goal stats (44.7% over two years). His free-throw stats are second all-time in Fresno State history, and he was in the top-20 shooters for sophomores in the NCAA.

Saying that his favourite athlete growing up was Kobe Bryant, the Pacers would undoubtedly love Paul George to take after the long-time Lakers superstar. He looks up to Kobe mostly for his work ethic and his ability to pull in rebounds when he doesn’t score points, making him an effective all-around player.

Many analysts view Paul George as the new cornerstone of the franchise they haven’t had since Jermaine O’Neil was shipped out of town. George is still growing into his game. Literally. On draft day he was listed at 6-8 but in training camp before his second season he was measured at 6-10. Seen constantly in the weight room, no one denies this Slam Dunk Contest won’t be his last. Chase Budinger

Chase Budinger 300x201

Meet Chase Budinger…

…a competitor of the 2012 NBA Slam Dunk contest!

Budinger was a hot commodity coming out of his high school career at La Costa Canyon High School, with offers coming from schools such as UCLA and USC, but he eventually signed with the Wildcats.

Interestingly, he declared himself twice for the NBA draft, originally after his freshman year and projected to go mid-1st round. He opted out the day of the deadline for declaration of eligibility, deciding to play for two more seasons. He declared after his junior season, effectively ending his college career by NCAA rules. Originally projected to go mid-1st round, he was taken 44th by the Detroit Pistons.

Chase Budinger is participating for the first time this season in the Slam Dunk Contest 2012.  His career-high in points was 35 in the 2011 season finale against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is known mostly for his offensive spark, and had an outside chance of being a lottery pick in his draft year but his stock dropped severely due to his lack of defensive abilities.

Chase Budinger Fun Facts

He has played with a couple future athletes in highschool, including future quarterback of the New York Jets Kevin O’Connell.

In the MacDonalds All-Star game in 2006 he shared the co-MVP title with future superstar NBA player Kevin Durant.

Chase Budinger was also on the cover of NCAA Basketball 2009 for xBox 360.

Chase also hosted a Basketball Camp at La Costa Canyon High School, and he hosted a free event called “Bowl and Bash” to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Jeremy Evans

Jeremy Evans1

Meet Jeremy Evans

Jeremy Evans is an explosive small forward that was taken 55th overall in the 2010 NBA draft. He also won the Slam Dunk Contest 2012.

Evans played a prominent role for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, helping the team reach the Sweet Sixteen round in the 2008 NCAA Basketball tournament and the 2nd round in the 2009 tournament. Evans is one of two players drafted in the NBA from WKU since 1996 and he also is the all-time leader in blocks with 224 and field-goal percentage at .693. Jeremy Evans played for the Crossett Eagles in high school.

Jeremy Evans’ teammates consider him to be an exceptional athlete. While most would say he needs to put on some pounds, teammate Andrei Kirilenko is quoted saying “We just like jealous a little bit, like, ‘Ah, I want to be like him right now”. Teammate Raja Bell says, “He’s a freaky athlete”.

Many wouldn’t guess, but along with being such a “freaky athlete”, Jeremy Evans also has an artist’s ability and there are sketches he created that are still in the WKU athletic offices. His most famous is a sketch of CBS analyst Dan Bonner that was showcased on national television during WKU’s 2nd round NCAA tournament game against Gonzaga in 2009.

Derrick Williams

 Derrick Williams

Meet Derrick Williams

Derrick Williams has much more of a superstar’s story compared to most participating in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest. Williams had originally decided to play for the highly-touted program at USC, but was swayed by first-year coach Sean Miller to attend the University of Arizona. The decision proved to give the future superstar the tools he needed to make an impact in the NCAA.

Derrick Williams’ first season averaged 15.7 points-per-game and he was named PAC-10 Freshman of the Year and team co-MVP. It was his second year that would put him ultimately over the top on a national scale.

Williams flourished in his sophomore season, averaging 19.5 points-per-game and 8.3 rebounds per game. He led his Arizona teammates to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Basketball Tournament in dramatic fashion. Williams blocked a potential game-winner against Memphis in the 2nd round, cashed in on a jumper and freethrow 3-point-play that took Arizona’s 3rd round game against Texas, and scored 32 points and 13 rebounds against the #1 ranked Duke in a game Arizona won by a resounding 16-point margin. Arizona eventually lost their next game by two points to the eventual champions, Conneticut.

The success of Derrick Williams’ sophomore year pursuaded him to declare himself eligible for the 2011 NBA draft, and he was consequently taken 2nd overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Williams is currently in his rookie season with the T-wolves, and is averaging 7.3 points-per-game and 4.2 rebounds- per-game while shooting a stellar 43.8% from the field. Despite being one of the youngest players involved in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest, he clearly has some of the highest star power the NBA has seen in a while. Let LeBron James Dunk in the Slam Dunk Contest 2012

The vid starts slow, but gets going quickly. They certainly makes a strong argument for letting Lebron James be part of the Slam Dunk Contest 2012.

Blake Griffin’s Greatest Dunk

By sheer force of will (okay, and some ridiculous athleticism), Blake Griffin pile drives the ball through the net against Kendrick Perkins. This might go down as Blake Griffin’s greatest dunk of all time. It certainly does, in my books anyway.

I love the crowd’s reaction…

The Slingshot Dunk

Ooohhh… I came across a VERY gorgeous dunk this week. They call it The Slingshot. Despite it’s crappy name, it’s kinda makes sense once you watch the video.  I’d be interested to see the perceived hangtime that someone like Lebron could put on this…

Kadour Ziani

Kadour Ziani, a name you need to know!

Kadour Ziani Slam Dunk 300x184

A few days ago, I did a post on the best dunker in the world, Kadour Ziani.   I figured people might be interested in reading more about this unknown dunker.  It’s a shame that only pros get noticed.  There’s a lot to be learned from little, unknown guys.  Many pros are simply genetics ‘freaks-of-nature’, whereas a 5’10″ fellow from nowhere is quite remarkable.

Kadour Ziani Kick 224x300

He has a five foot vert. He can kick a world record 9’9″. He’s 33. Algerian. Bad teeth. Big ups.  He’s a bit cocky for my liking, but man, I wish I could jump this high!  Flexibility seems to be a big plus for him, which is worth noting if you’re wanting to increase your vertical.

I apologize for the terrrrrible music, but the dunks that Kadour Ziani throws down in this video are great…
